Delivered during the Evenfall; Sunday Evening Worship, 10/19/2025. In the prologue to his First Epistle, John established both the humanity and preeminence of Christ, the authority of the apostolic witness, and the fact that true joy can only be found in a relationship with the Lord Jesus. John now turns to the heavenly message the Father has sent through the Son-- that God is perfect Light. We will carefully analyze the words of this verse, understanding the figurative meaning of "light" to be the perfect holiness, righteousness, glory and absolute truth of God. We will note the comparison with darkness and realize that darkness (or evil or falsehood) is merely the privation of the Light (or God, His holiness and truth), and that the Light John speaks of is eternal and utterly un-created. Ultimately we will learn that as Christians we must be on our guard against any doctrine or teaching that "creates" truth by adding or subtracting from God's uncreated truth; and thus to seek our sanctification by recognizing, accepting and living in God's UNCREATED LIGHT.
