Description:

Throughout his Gospel, John has used the various Jewish feast days to undergird the themes of his narratives. In our text for this study he moves us from the Feast of Booths to the Feast of Dedication, also known as the Festival of Lights. In doing so he adds new insight to the confrontation between Jesus and the Jews and gives us some valuable lessons about our effectiveness as ambassadors of Light. We will especially notice the continued play in John on light and darkness and realize that the Messiah the Jews are demanding is far too feeble-- far too dim of a light to be the true Light of the World. We will apply this tragic way of looking at Jesus to our own world, where both believers and unbelievers dim the Light of Christ and thereby find themselves blinded by their own dim lights!
